A vital part of PCI’s “notthebigcompany” culture is community service. The weekend of September 22nd, more than 70 PCI associates and their families and friends joined together to “make a difference” by refurbishing a home in South Dallas. 2014 marks the fifteenth year that PCI has partnered with Hearts and Hammers, whose mission is to provide free, home improvement help for senior and physically disabled homeowners in towns across America. Their main purpose is to refurbish the exterior of homes for qualified low-income homeowners so they may continue living independently.
This goal is met by providing teams of volunteers with needed leadership, expertise, resources, and materials. For example, most Hearts & Hammers homes require significant exterior painting, carpentry, and landscaping to restore the weatherproofing, security, and overall appeal of the home. All of this at no cost to the homeowner.
Every year, PCI participates in this volunteer opportunity. Last weekend, under the skillful leadership of Colin Stewart, PCI Senior Account Executive, dozens of Publishing Concepts volunteers arrived to find paint, tools, direction, construction materials, and landscaping materials. We also had breakfast, a lot of fun and water, water, water.
We assisted a 69-year-old grandmother by bringing her home’s exterior and yard up to required standards. Perhaps the best part of the day was seeing her joy when her home makeover was revealed. She chose the paint colors and was thrilled with the “after” look.
Hearts & Hammers is a great way to enjoy the benefits of volunteering, all the while having a good time.
